Surabaya, July 23, 2024 – The Indonesian Coconut Charcoal Briquette Entrepreneurs Association (HIPBAKI) appears as one of the leading Sponsors, Exhibitors, Speakers, and Field Trip Providers at the Cocotech 2024 event, which will take place from July 22 to 25, 2024 at The Westinn Surabaya Hotel, Surabaya, Indonesia.
Chairman 1 of HIPBAKI, Mr. Asep Mulyana, said, “The coconut shell briquette industry in Indonesia has experienced rapid development in the last five years, the development of the coconut shell briquette industry is very encouraging, even faster than other coconut derivative products. “The market for this product continues to grow, especially because Indonesia is the only country capable of producing coconut shell briquettes with white ash, which is in great demand in the international market,” he explained.
Problems and challenges that occur in the Coconut Shell Charcoal Briquette Industry in Indonesia
Indonesia is currently the world’s largest and number one producer of waste charcoal briquettes, a product that is highly sought after by consumers in the Middle East and is starting to grow rapidly in Europe, America, Russia, and Latin countries. “Demand continues to increase, even during the COVID-19 pandemic when many other industries are experiencing a decline,” said Mr. Asep Mulyana as Chairman 1 of HIPBAKI.
However, the industry also faces a number of challenges. “The main problem is the availability of raw materials which are increasingly difficult to obtain and the price continues to increase,” said Mr. Asep Mulyana as Chairman 1 of HIPBAKI. In addition, the export of whole coconuts and their shells also reduces the availability of raw materials domestically.
One of HIPBAKI’s main objectives in participating in Cocotech 2024 is to raise global awareness about the benefits of coconut charcoal briquettes as a renewable energy source that can reduce dependence on fossil fuels. With the global market shifting towards more sustainable products, Indonesian coconut charcoal briquettes are a very attractive option for consumers and industries looking to reduce their carbon footprint.
Another challenge is logistics and shipping. “Shipping costs are getting more expensive and shipping times are getting longer, especially because of the container queues at the ports of Singapore and Malaysia,” said Mr. Asep Mulyana as Chairman 1 of HIPBAKI. He hopes that the government can consider direct shipping from Indonesia to the destination country to save time and costs.
Even so, the industry continues to strive to increase production to meet the increasing demand. “Currently, Indonesia is the largest producer of coconut shell charcoal briquettes in the world, surpassing other countries in coconut derivative products,” said Mr. Asep Mulyana as Chairman 1 of HIPBAKI.
HIPBAKI Campaign
In an effort to maintain environmental sustainability, HIPBAKI also runs a campaign “Save the Earth with Coconut Shell Briquettes” which aims to reduce the use of charcoal briquettes from wood. “Coconut shell briquettes are a more environmentally friendly alternative and we continue to promote their use throughout the world,” said Mr. Asep Mulyana as Chairman 1 of HIPBAKI.
Asep also appreciated the Cocotech event initiated by ICC every year. “This event is an important opportunity for coconut industry players in the world to share information, programs, knowledge, and new technologies. The opening of the event by President Jokowi shows the government’s seriousness in restoring the glory of the coconut industry,” he said.
HIPBAKI itself was formed on the initiative of coconut charcoal briquette industry players in Indonesia. “HIPBAKI has 26 large industries as members with significant production capacity, and collaborates with the PERPAKI association to advance the coconut charcoal briquette industry in Indonesia,” concluded Asep Jembar Mulyana as Chairman 1 of HIPBAKI.
With optimism and cooperation, Mr. Asep Mulyana is confident that the Indonesian coconut shell briquette industry will continue to grow and make a positive contribution to the national economy.
